The Immeasureable Universe

By Bill Foore

Ecclesiastes says science is a gift from God. Why would God give us such a thing? I think it has to do with seeing how great He is. Just think of the sheer size of the Universe. We live on one spiral wing of the Milky Way Galaxy. If we could travel at light speed 186,000 miles/second (or about 10 trillion miles per hour), it would take us 100,000 years to get to the other side of the Galaxy. Scientists show us pictures of millions of galaxies. The enormous size of the Universe leads scientists to believe in extraterrestrial beings. They believe life must have evolved somewhere else, because the Universe is so vast. To humans, size is daunting (for ex: 1,000,000 Earths can fit inside the sun...and the sun is an average-sized star!) But, to an all-powerful God, size is meaningless.

Jeremiah says that God stretched out the Universe in the palm of His hand. Just bask in the incredible power of a Being so great that His very words create. His amazing intellect designed gravity, energy, planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies; and, He did all this to verify that He is all powerful. Look and see that the Lord is great!

All this cosmic, unquenchable, immeasurable power and God says, "I care about YOU!" The next time something massive or unimaginably large comes to the forefront of your conscience, pause to think that the God of the Universe wants us to "be still and know that He is God."

Psalm 8: 3-4 –– When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers –– the moon and the stars You have set in place –– What are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us?
