Is This the Summation of Your Life Guys?
I walked into a shop where several men in their sixties, seventies, and eighties were discussing politics. They were trash-talking everyone and everything –– using God’s name in vain frequently. I made a brief comment but realized their “hardening of the arteries and attitudes ” was too advanced to have a coherent conversation.
Thinking they were impressing each other with their crude and vulgar comments, I thought –– and stopped myself short of saying, “So this is the summation of your lives? God created you and allowed you to live on His planet to develop a relationship with Him and reflect His values. But after all these years this is all you have attained.”
I felt pity for them as I pondered their current and probable future states. How could men who should be mature and wise be reduced to such senselessness? How sad and wasteful to spend the waning years of one’s life in foolish and futile conversation and behavior. I think they need to learn the wisdom of David ––
As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him.... (Psalm 103: 15 - 17)
And gain insight from Paul ––
Be very careful, then, how you live –– not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5: 15, 16)
